How to Apply for a Credit Card – the Right Way

Applying for  a credit card can seem like a pretty big deal and a formidable task. And it can be. There are so many different cards and options to choose from it can become pretty confusing pretty quickly. But there are a few points that you need to keep in mind when applying for a credit card. Some of them include:

Check Your Credit Score Before You Apply
This is an often overlooked step that most people forget about. Especially people who have never had a credit card before. You want to know what your credit score is like so that you can apply for a credit card that you are most likely to be accepted for. If you have a low credit score, chances are you won’t be accepted for a credit card with a high unsecured credit limit (almost all credit cards are unsecured) and you may have to end up choosing more of a “starter” or “rebuilder” credit card where you have to put up some money first in order to actually get a card. Many will have to apply for a student credit card or apply for a credit card with bad credit first. Although there are instant approval credit cards out there.  The tribute credit card is a good example of this kind of card. With a card like this, you may be able to work on improving or fixing your credit card so that in time you may be able to graduate to an unsecured credit card with a higher credit limit.

Apply for a Credit Card that Suits You
If you aren’t interested in airline miles, don’t go and get an airline mile credit card just because you like the picture on the front of the card. Seriously, you need to sit down and decide what is the most important for you. Look at your options. Do you want an airline mile credit card? Would a lower interest rate on balances be better for you (if you know that your payments haven’t always been in full every month)? What about balance transfers? Do you need to transfer any existing debt from a higher interest rate over into a credit card with a lower rate? Are you looking for a cash back credit card, where you can get a percentage of your yearly spending rebated back against your bill? Would additional benefits and savings in your favorite store help you out more?

It can really help to sit down and decide on what sort of card you really need before applying for a card.

Do Credit Card Research
It’s great that you’ve come here on your credit card journey to do some research. It’s more than many people do at times. But you need to become familiar with the different options that are available and what they mean for you, which leads us to the next and most important point of all:

Read the Fine Print in the Contract
You must take the time to read the fine print. Many times, listed in the contract somewhere is an explanation of the terms and conditions of the credit card. It will explain very important things to you, such as for example if you miss or are late on a payment, does that mean that your interest rate will go up? In most cases, if you have a lower rate and miss a payment within the time period where you will have an introductory rate, you will immediately lose the lower interest rate and will be charged the full interest rate. Or another example would be that there may be a charge to perform a balance transfer on your card. And the fee can be pretty high (like $100 per transaction!). So please – make sure you read the fine print.
